River Cruise Tips for First-Timers
Posted Under: Cruise Tips
Every ‘first time’ is meant to be memorable and guilt-free. If it’s your first time on a river cruise, the last thing you would want is to get caught unawares. The best way to ensure an unforgettable first-time excursion on a river cruise is to make sure you’re ready for absolutely anything!
Tip Number One: Avoid Getting Seasick
Not everybody experiences sickness at sea; but if you’ve never been on a ship before, you’ll want to make sure you avoid spending the rest of your first river cruise bent over the side of the ship or hugging a bucket in your room. To avoid this dilemma, make sure you: a) drink a lot of water and avoid eating anything that might make your stomach at the slightest bit queasy, and b) bring your own stash of sea sickness pills, so you won’t have to worry about obtaining them from someone on the ship itself.
Tip Number Two: Pack the Right Clothes
It doesn’t matter where you plan on going, it is a must to wear shoes and clothes that you are comfortable in for when you reach port. If you’re going on your river cruise in the summer, make sure to dress in light cotton clothing. Also, bring a swimsuit and pack a warm jacket and a hat – just in case. You never know when rain will pour. Most river cruise ships host a formal dinner night, as well, so evening gowns and tuxedos are other handy clothes you should pack.
Tip Number Three: Tip Those on the River Cruise Ship
This can be a little tricky; but, in general, your waiters, housekeepers and the maitre d’ will expect some form of compensation throughout your river cruise, most of all if your ship doesn’t automatically charge you with a daily tipping fee. $1-$3 is usually an acceptable daily tipping amount per person in your group. This will ensure an amicable atmosphere throughout your excursion.
Tip Number Four: Bring Your Passport
This is a major necessity – and only if you plan on leaving the country, but also if you just plan on crossing into Mexico and countries throughout the Caribbean. Most travelers are wary to bring their passports because they fear they might lose them, but don’t worry: most river cruise ships provide in-room safes, where you can keep your valuables while onboard. When on port, however, it is best to keep your belongings safe in a thin money belt hidden under your clothes.
Now that you know the basics, just relax and soak in the experience. Even though you are certain to go on more river cruises after this one, first times only come once in a lifetime, so make the most of it.
